We also made a game about AI that we hope allows players to see a little bit about how and AI can successfully complete a task set for it in bizarre and unpredictable ways. It’s called Task Failed Successfully, and you can read all about it here, download the playing cards, and order the other supplies.
Task Failed Successfully Prep Guide
University of Utah, Responsible AI Praxis Lab
3+ Players, ~30 minutes but highly tunable
Task Failed Successfully is a fun social card game where players play the role of helpful but all too literal AI. The game is simple! Players draw cards from the middle, and perform the described task as best as they can to win points (oooh, AIs love points!). But here’s the catch—it’s actually really hard to fully specify the rules of a task, so… we didn’t! Many tasks have loopholes and exploits that successful AIs will happily take advantage of—even if it “seems” like an AI failed its task by the spirit of the card, as long as an AI is technically successful, it gets points!
Materials:
Necessary—
- Task Failed Successfully Deck
- Print out deck using PDF, print on both sides while flipping on long edge
- Cut out deck
- 6 dice (best if 2/player)
- Paper and pencils (for each player)
- Smartphones (for each player)
Recommended—
- 30s and 60s hourglass
- For easier timing
- ~100 red and green 8mm acrylic cubes (or sub another token of two colors/types)
- For easier point accounting
We’ve created an Amazon cart with all of these materials here. Some things may be cheaper to source locally (like pencils and paper). However, this cart should contain enough materials for 4 games of 5 people for ~$65.
Printing:
The deck + instructions takes 8 sheets of front/back printing, for a total of 63 cards. We recommend printing on cardstock, and cutting the cards with a paper cutter. If possible, the corners should also be rounded, which can be done with a handheld corner cutter. Below is the official version followed by a printer friendly version.
Good luck, and have fun playing as mischievous AI!
